Regulations to protect vulnerable offshore fish species are expected to place additional pressures on popular near-shore species such as herring, whiting and tailor.

With populations of near-shore fish already in decline, the Department of Fisheries-with the help of recreational and commercial fishing industries and the community-is developing approaches to investigate the age structure and stock status of these species.

These approaches will form the basis for a long-term monitoring program to help manage the recreational, commercial and cultural activities that depend on these fish species.

    Investment: $ 910 250
    Delivery organisation: Department of Fisheries
    Project duration: August 2009 - June 2012
Location: West Coast and South Coast bioregions
