13047: Post fire restoration in the Canning River Regional Park

Post-fire restoration works on an 11.7 hectare section of the Canning River have achieved positive results.

One-off emergency funding from the Swan River Trust following a fire in 2011 allowed the first three years of weed control to occur. Excellent germination of native over-storey species occurred as a result of this.

Understory species have been slower to respond and require on-going weed control to allow natural regeneration.

This project aims to restore understory species in the area to help stabilise banks, provide habitat and prevent further weed invasion.

    Activities include:

    • continued control of weeds
    • planting of understory species (32 000 plants in total)
    • national tree planting day event with local schools.
    Investment: $ 50 000
Delivery organisation: South East Regional Centre for Urban Landcare
    Project duration: December 2013 - November 2015
Location: Canning River Foreshore in Ferndale
