14133: Friends of Big Swamp: Caring for a valuable urban wetland in a drying climate

Big Swamp is a large urban wetland in City of Bunbury fed by the Five Mile Brook. This project aims to monitor changing water levels in the 31ha Swamp to help manage its transition from current conditions to a drier future without undue harm to the existing ecosystem.

Friends of Big Swamp and Leschenault Catchment Council will work with the City of Bunbury (owners of the land) to appoint a consultant to prepare a community water monitoring program for the Swamp and Five Mile Brook, with the data to be used to inform decision making on the future of Five Mile Brook seasonal diversion practice. Friends of  Big Swamp will continue regular bird surveys.
