15151: Improving the ecological linkage value of the Harvey River system

This project seeks to continue management of Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus), a Weed of National Significance (WoNS), along the riparian corridor of the Harvey River between Stirling Dam and Harvey Dam, and along Wokalup Creek within the Shire of Harvey. The project will enhance connectivity between Class A State Forest and remnant bushland in both public and private ownership.

This project is a continuation of an Australian Government funded project undertaken between September of 2012 and December of 2014. The methodology employed is based on two successful programs of Blackberry control. The first, entitled the 'Blackberry Buffer Zone' program, initiated by the Department of Agriculture and Food and continued by the South West Catchments Council; the second that of the Warren Catchments Council along the Warren River.

To date the project has achieved some very good control of Blackberry on both public and private land with a significant reduction in Blackberry biomass attained. However, follow-up control is necessary for several years based on remaining canes and seed bank (accumulated over an unknown time-frame). Through this project we have developed a strong connection with landholders (particularly along Wokalup Creek) participating in the program. It is therefore very important that we continue to foster these connections.  Extension of weed control activities and selective revegetation will enhance biodiversity and natural regeneration, increase habitat, and raise awareness of the need and importance to control invasive weed species. Furthermore, the project will continue to build on partnerships between various stakeholders, raise public awareness of the ecological values of the area through community activities, and provide landholders and community members with a strong sense of environmental stewardship.
